Joris Van Spilbergen, was a Dutch pirate who set sail in one of the six ships going towards Magellan's strait. The intention of this expedition was to get east to establish an office in the Moluccas and to bring goods. Besides they were seeking to strike blows to the Spanish and Portuguese colonies to steal their large shipments of silver that were leaving from Arica's port. Spilbergen, did scale in Mocha island in 1615.
